In short
I'm 35 years old now and I've worked in the hospitality industry for a long time. Of course, you can work well in the hospitality industry when you're 35, but it was a bit done for me and I wanted something different. Computers, technology and everything related to them have always intrigued me. That's why I decided to make a career change.
Of course, I hesitated for a while before I started, because you really have to go for it. I never finished high school and wasn't immediately a model student before, so that scares off a bit. I told myself pretty quickly that that's nonsense. I'm 35 years old now and I'm living in a completely different way.
I started the course Web Development for Beginners, I really liked that and went well! Coding really appealed to me and that was decisive for me. The fact that I did find it so interesting that I kept busy at the laptop was really a tipping point for me. What I like most is that it's a kind of puzzling. You have a goal in mind and by trying, researching and puzzling, you ultimately try to achieve that goal. I love the fact that you end up creating something out of nothing, even though you've never done it on the computer before!
Winc Academy came my way more or less by chance. Actually, I just rolled in. I had already looked up several things. For example, I tried to work in IT via a traineeship, but before that, 9 times out of 10, they ask for at least a completed higher professional education, so I still didn't get to work. For a higher professional education, I had to take an entrance exam because I never finished high school. In principle, I was already working on that, preparing for the entrance exams, until Winc Academy suddenly stopped by.
Then I thought, this is actually ideal! Here, the entry requirements are not as strict as for a higher professional education or traineeship.
I have the training first Web Development for Beginners done and I've now started the Front-end training. Of course, I find it all exciting. Not something specific, but more generally. I expect that to be hard work, a lot of learning, frustration. But also quite a lot of victories, I think! I'm most excited in the period that follows. That I look back on this period and can say: I was completely blue back then, I couldn't do anything then, and now, a few weeks later, I can suddenly perform and present something.
I hope that in a year I will have found a place somewhere and will be busy with what I have learned. So that I'm just having fun at work. I'm not sure if that will be with a large or a small company yet, it sounds interesting to both of me. I do like small companies, because they are often just fun, a little less corporate and that has something warm about it. But I also went to Microsoft at Schiphol once, and I loved that too. It's big and impressive when you walk around there. So big or small doesn't really matter to me, we're going to see!
