There are many different programming languages and more are being added every year. To give you a push in the right direction, we've listed the five most popular programming languages of 2020 for you.
As Dutch people, we can be proud to put Python first, because it is a programming language from the Netherlands that was introduced in 1991.
Python is used for operating systems, mathematical and scientific software, and in the development of web applications.
One of the reasons that Python is popular is that it is used in cutting-edge research areas. Robotics, machine learning, AI, big data and cyber security projects make extensive use of this programming language.
Since its launch in 1995, JavaScript has become a well-known and widely used programming language. JavaScript, among other things, makes web pages dynamic and interactive. Due to the continued demand for interaction on websites, JavaScript remains one of the most popular languages.
You can quickly start learning JavaScript, what's also attractive is that it's supported in all browsers. JavaScript is the only language that can be run in all browsers and therefore effectively has a monopoly there.
PHP, or “PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor”, is a popular language. WordPress is software that creates an awful lot of websites. WordPress and the WordPress plugins are all written in PHP. The representation and demand for PHP developers is high, which means that there are plenty of job opportunities for this.
C++ is a successor to C and, unlike its predecessor, an object-oriented programming language. In general, this is seen as a complicated language to learn; it takes a lot of time and attention to learn C++. Due to the versatility of this language, it can be used for many different purposes. As an example, the Windows operating system is written in C++, and large 3D games are also written in this programming language.
Like C++, C# is an object-oriented programming language developed by Microsoft. As a C# developer, you have many options, for example, websites, applications and games can be used to develop. Why Microsoft developed this language is quite ironic. Sun, Java's parent company, did not want Microsoft to make changes to Java. Microsoft's response, to create its own programming language.
