In the Netherlands there are three ways to become a full-stack developer: a bootcamp, a home study course or an online course at your own pace. Which kind of retraining fits depends on your hours per week, whether you keep your job and what you want to have at the end. Below are seven providers on the same points. You can read what the work involves on the Full-Stack Development course page at Winc Academy.

The short answer: which provider suits you?

If you want to learn online at your own pace next to your job, with a teacher who checks your work, choose Full-Stack Development at Winc Academy. If you want to learn intensively with live classes or many hours per week, look at Calder Academie or the Bootcamp at Bit Academy. LOI and NHA offer home study with a diploma. Full-time and fast is possible at Le Wagon (2 months full-time) and Ironhack (9 or 11 weeks full-time, in English).

Winc Academy: Full-Stack Development

At Winc Academy you learn 100% online, at your own pace, with no fixed schedules or required class times. Teachers and study coaches support you 1-on-1: you ask your questions on Slack or in a 1-on-1 session. The course material is always in English and usually also in Dutch. The course has 570 study hours at HBO level and you get 9 months of access. No prior knowledge is needed. You start with HTML, CSS and JavaScript and build up to React, Node.js, Express and databases with SQL.

You finish with a certificate from Winc Academy, a CRKBO-registered provider affiliated with the NRTO. A good fit for people who want to learn online next to their job, with a teacher who checks their work. Not a fit if you want a government-recognised MBO or HBO diploma. Not sure yet? Calder Academie: Bootcamp Full Stack Developer

The bootcamp takes 6 months, online with live classes you can watch again later. You start in February, April, August or November; a part-time option is easier to combine with work. You get an HBO function certificate and 60 EC from 2 modules of an HBO ICT bachelor; Calder Academie has the NRTO quality mark. No prior knowledge is needed (motivation matters most) and paying in 12 instalments is possible. A good fit for people who want live classes and fixed start dates.

Bit Academy: Pro Full Stack Web Developer and Full Stack Developer Bootcamp

Bit Academy has two routes, both starting at beginner level. Pro takes an estimated 15 to 24 months, online at your own pace next to work or study; you get a recognised Pro certificate plus a portfolio and pay monthly. The Bootcamp takes 6 to 12 months at 16 to 32 hours per week, 100% remote, with a required three-month internship and an HBO-recognised certificate (30 EC). A good fit for people who want to learn at their own pace over a longer time (Pro) or intensively with an internship (Bootcamp).

LOI: HBO programme Full-stack developer

The programme takes 11 months, online; you start whenever you like and a teacher is always available. You need no previous education and pay monthly. You get the HBO programme Full-stack developer diploma, part of the HBO bachelor Informatica (Software engineering). A good fit for people who want a diploma that is part of an HBO bachelor.

NHA: Full Stack Developer

A home study course of 12 months at 4 hours per week, at your own pace, with a personal teacher; you can start any day. You need no specific previous education, but some experience with computers is preferred. You finish with an NHA institute diploma after three theory exams and a practical exam at home; according to NHA, its OCW recognition does not apply to this course. NHA points to your employer (Personal Development Budget) and calls itself Cedeo-recognised. A good fit for people with few hours who want to finish with exams.

Le Wagon Amsterdam: AI Software

Full-time takes 2 months (40 hours per week), part-time 6 months in the evenings and at weekends (16 hours per week). You learn on campus in Amsterdam or online. What you get and what prior knowledge you need are not mentioned on the page. You pay in instalments, with government funding and subsidies, scholarships, an Income Share Agreement (you pay back once you have a job) or through your employer. A good fit for people who want to learn fast and full-time, or who have evenings and weekends free.

Ironhack: Web Development

Full-time takes 9 or 11 weeks, part-time 26 weeks. You learn remotely, in English, on Central European Time. What you get and what prior knowledge you need are not mentioned on the page. You pay upfront or in instalments over 3, 6 or 10 months; TechMeUp is there for students from underrepresented groups. A good fit for people who want to learn fast, full-time and in English.

Bootcamp, home study or online at your own pace?

A bootcamp means learning intensively, with fixed start dates and many hours per week, for people who want to switch fast. Calder Academie and Bit Academy use this name for their course; Le Wagon and Ironhack have short full-time options.

Home study means studying at home with a remote teacher, ending with exams or a diploma, for people with few hours per week. Examples: LOI and NHA.

Online at your own pace means everything online, with no fixed class times, for people who keep their job. Examples: Bit Academy Pro and Winc Academy, where teachers support you 1-on-1.

Don't want to learn it all? At Winc Academy you can also learn only the front-end or learn only the back-end.

How to choose: four questions

How many hours per week do you have? With few hours, NHA (4 hours per week) or your own pace at Winc Academy or Bit Academy Pro fits. With many hours, the Bit Academy Bootcamp (16 to 32 hours) or Le Wagon full-time (40 hours).

Are you keeping your job? Then Winc Academy, NHA, Bit Academy Pro or a part-time option at Calder Academie or Le Wagon fit. Without a job, full-time at Le Wagon or Ironhack is also possible.

Do you want fixed class times or your own pace? You get fixed times at Calder Academie (live classes) and Le Wagon, your own pace at Winc Academy, NHA and Bit Academy Pro.

What do you want at the end: a diploma, a certificate or a portfolio? You get a diploma at LOI and NHA, a certificate with EC at Calder Academie and the Bit Academy Bootcamp. Winc Academy gives a certificate, Bit Academy Pro a certificate plus a portfolio.

Who pays for your retraining in the Netherlands?

You pay for your retraining yourself, or someone helps: UWV if you receive a WW benefit, your employer, a regional training budget or TechMeUp. Other providers name routes too. NHA and Le Wagon point to your employer. Le Wagon names government funding and subsidies, Calder Academie possible subsidies and Ironhack TechMeUp. Paying in instalments or monthly is possible at Calder Academie, Le Wagon, Ironhack, LOI and Bit Academy Pro. According to Calder Academie, regular student finance does not apply to its bootcamp.

How you can pay at Winc Academy:

  • Yourself: in one go or in instalments.
  • Employer: many students have their employer pay from a personal learning budget or training budget, for example when your collective labour agreement (cao) includes agreements on learning. With a step-by-step plan you can have your employer pay.
  • UWV: if you receive a WW benefit, UWV can pay for the course if it improves your chance of work in a high-demand profession. UWV decides. Read more about retraining through UWV.
  • Regional: Haaglanden Leert Door, Scholingsbudget regio Rijnmond, Scholingscheque regio Twente, Scholingsvoucher regio Achterhoek and Groei Vooruit. See the training budgets by region.
  • Temporary worker: a training voucher for temporary workers (DOORZAAM).
  • TechMeUp: an interest-free loan through TechMeUp for tuition and fixed costs such as rent. You only pay back what you borrow, once you have a paid job in IT.
