Employers like to invest

The employer is usually happy to invest in further training staff. A smart move, because it ensures that staff stays motivated, becomes more skilled, can be deployed sustainably and contributes to a good image. In most cases, an employer benefits directly from the new knowledge and skills you gain. In addition, the study costs are also fully tax deductible.

A lot of training budget goes up in smoke

Although almost every employer makes a budget available to train employees, only 39 percent makes use of it. (Source: CBS) Many companies set the training budget for one calendar year. As a result, your budget expires at the end of the year if you don't use it. That is of course a shame! You can easily prevent your training budget from going up in smoke by checking whether you are entitled to it and, if possible, selecting and applying for a course in time.

Does my employer have a training budget?

There are a few things you can do to easily find out if your employer has a training budget. The first thing you can do is see if anything about the training budget is described in your employment contract or collective labor agreement. Do you not know what collective agreement you fall under? In most cases, you can easily find this in your contract. If there is nothing about the training budget in your collective labor agreement or employment contract, it is possible that your employer has a development policy. The easiest way to find out is to ask your manager or someone from the HR department.

How do I apply for the training budget?

By now, you have found out whether your employer has a training budget available. Isn't that the case? Then do this funding test and discover other options that can help you finance your education.

Before applying for your training budget, you should first check what you want to spend your training budget on. Do you already have a course or, better still, a course in mind? Super! Not sure yet? Do the study choice test and you'll find out in just 5 minutes.

Once you know what course you want to follow, it is time to consider the best way to present this to your employer. Complete the 3 steps below and increase the chances of approval of your application.

Step 1: preparation of the proposal

Training is not only beneficial for you, but also for your employer. Before applying for the training budget from your employer, you would do well to take a good look at what benefits your chosen course will offer your employer. Due to the rapidly changing labor market due to automation and digitization, among other things, there is a good chance that ideas will soon come to mind why it is beneficial for your employer that you follow a course.

A few possible examples include:

  • Staying up to date in your field
  • To be able to carry out your tasks more efficiently
  • Specializing in your job
  • Increase the quality of your work
  • Remain sustainably employable
  • Increasing happiness at work

Step 2: Request a Quote

Now that you know how to convince your employer to finance your chosen course, it's time to request a quote. Via this page request your quote easily and quickly. By sending the quote directly in your request, you will immediately make a good impression.

Step 3: Request your training budget

Now that you know what course you want to follow, know the benefits for your employer and have a quote, you have everything you need to apply for your training budget. Please write an email with your proposal and the quote or request a meeting and make your proposal fully prepared. Now we have to wait for the response. You got home!

Request approved?

Yes, good news! Your employer has agreed to your proposal. What next? As an employee, you often receive a training agreement. In this agreement, you make agreements about the training together with your employer. Like when you start and when you finish it. You can then register for the course and then it's just a matter of waiting until you can start!
