Arno (47) had no interest in doing the same job for another 20 years, he wanted something different. A career change later in life is not a step that everyone dares to take. Arno did this anyway and did not regret it for a second. From his own experience, he explains why you are never too old to learn.
“Imagine, you're over 45 years old and you know you don't want to keep doing your current job until retirement. A lot of people will recognize this. Then there are questions like, what am I going to do in the coming years? What kind of work is useful for me and society? These were questions that have been on my mind in recent years. It's exciting to say these questions out loud. Especially with your employer, but also with family and friends. In the end, I decided to broach this topic after all. I noticed that from that point on, it becomes important to stay at the helm yourself and not immediately follow all well-intentioned advice. I've heard feedback and so I sat down on the moor for a few days to think.”
“I knew things had to be done differently and that happened. I'm really excited about it now, but change doesn't come without fits and starts. I encountered myself a lot in this process and that was necessary. I've thought and said it a lot of times: I want to start making things again, do something with my hands and I also want to be able to make a nice living with it. When programming came my way, I tackled this. After trying something out myself, I started training at Winc Academy.”
“The course consisted of exciting weeks, in which I not only learned to (learn to) program, but also learned a lot about myself. It's not easy to learn a new language (or multiple languages). I've learned how to structure the course material, how to best tackle problems and how to ask for help if I can't figure something out. It's really back to basics sometimes, which felt crazy at times, like I was back in high school, but most of the time it felt good. It sometimes takes a chore to learn something new.”
“I have completed this course for a few weeks now and started working as a Front-end Developer at Winc Academy itself. I'm now getting to know Wordpress like the back of my hand, do it with great confidence and go to work on my bike whistling every morning. I'm at the start of my new career and I 100% believe it was the right thing to do.”
“You're never too old to learn how to program and everyone has a role in IT. That's why I put old in quotes. Because what is old? I think you're old when you don't follow your heart and don't dare. In any case, I don't feel old yet and I'm happy with the step I took and the training I followed at Winc. - And now I'm back to developing!”
